Hello everyone, and welcome to September!
Labor Day always feels like the beginning of something new. I still get a little jolt of back-to-school exhilaration with the promise of crisp mornings and fresh notebooks and new things to learn. The city wakes up after a sleepy August, and there’s suddenly a deluge of activities that quickly fill up the calendar. This always feels like a season for doing stuff.
Of course, my September reality is a lot more chaotic. For one, we’re experiencing a crazy heat wave in NYC this week. My kid starts school today, and I’m also throwing a party and hosting out-of-town guests this weekend. I’ve got a million and one projects in the works, and it’s one of those weeks where childcare is a struggle even with my amazing mom helping out. I can’t get it all done, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to try like hell and hope nothing super important falls through the cracks. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
This week also marks five years since Refinery29 Money Diaries: Everything You've Ever Wanted to Know about Your Finances... and Everyone Else's first published. I still feel so proud of the book. Last week, when Barbara Ginty and I were recording one of the interviews for our upcoming podcast, our guest mentioned she found us because she read the book. It was such a treat to hear that five years later people are still discovering the book and finding it useful. I still find copies on the shelves at Barnes & Noble, and I’ve yet to see it on the bargain table, which I once told my friend Caroline was my biggest fear. (If you’ve seen it, please don’t tell me!)
