Thanks for the informative, insightful words on a topic that's supposed to be boring. And congratulations, Alicia, on your NYT article. Woo!

Let's take a minute and think about Walker's words.

"The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any."

What worries me most here is not Powell as a person, but the signal this sends. Central bank independence only works if it is boring, predictable, and insulated from power grabs. Once that perception cracks, markets do not wait for the legal outcome. They price in fear, uncertainty, and future interference.

Lower rates might feel attractive in the short term, but history shows the cost shows up later through inflation and loss of trust. When monetary policy becomes another lever of political loyalty, the damage outlives any single chair or administration. This is less about economics and more about whether guardrails still matter.

Yes! 100% agree with this!

If whatever party decides its president is in control of the fed that's when SHTF. Institutions we once had faith in will no longer exist. Democracy will undergo such a collapse that we will not know where to turn for help. It is that serious. My personal belief is that the supreme court, and fed should not be beholden to any particular party. I also want tighter control on the fed and banks because they do stupid stuff and are not facing the consequences of their actions. No financial bigwig has been arrested or prosecuted for financial malfeasance and they should be.

I live in a very small town and we are starting to experience a significant slow down in spending. There are still people going out, buying things, but only as needed. Bars are slowing down, there are specials at various restaurants, but the prices, and fries are not included! People I know, love and look out for are quietly saying its going to get rougher. Don't depend on the government. Find a skill, plant a garden, work at a food bank, work pt at a grocery store. we are going to have to look out for our family, friends, and local communities.

Sorry this is a somber note, especially going into the weekend. Information is power that you can use. Onward.

That sucks you had to pay for the after school program in full up front! I did this for my daughter for one term last year and she ended up hating it and refused to go and I was so annoyed I hadn’t just done week to week, which was an option.
