I'm curious who does the cleaning. I can totally appreciate her comments about the mindset. How she thinks about family and work and he tends to think only of work while on work trips
I would have thought it would be mentioned when they mentioned laundry, garbage, dishes and cooking. Its part of tasks in my mind. Which then got me to thinking perhaps they have a cleaning person but even with a cleaning person there are still daily house pickups and such.
I can relate to this schedule a lot although this was an impressively long day with the air travel at the very beginning all the way to not getting home from softball until 9:45pm! With three preteen/teen kids, our days can often be very long too. They are way more independent with things like making school lunches and doing their own laundry, like this family, but only one of our kids has his driver's license so there's still a ton of coordinating and logistics with various activities and healthcare appointments (so many trip to the orthodontist if your kid needs braces!). And many activities only happen if there are parent volunteers. Which involves lots of emails and time in the evenings. So I could also relate to the constant personal and work life juggling back and forth and attention switching. Although summer comes with its own challenges, I do enjoy a break from the after-school hustle for a bit.
My children are younger, so I loved reading about older children and how the mental load of child-rearing seems to shift. I also appreciate how Adrienne is able to shift her focus so frequently to accomplish both work and personal tasks. I do wish the family would have chosen a day where both Matt and Adrienne were both actively involved in the home. I would have liked to see more about how they balance and divide the tasks in action, since Matt was only available on this day in the early morning.
We start at age 10 in our family. They get a new laundry basket as a birthday present - hah! There is still some reminding for a few years and I don’t care at all if things are folded as long as they make it into their dresser. Just thought I’d share in case it’s helpful.

Patricia, that’s a good question! Going forward, I’m going to tweak that first question about childcare to be more broadly about household support.

Dreaming of kids doing their own laundry! something to aspire to 🙌🏼
Truly! I need to get my kid to start helping with that!

lol that you give them a laundry basket for their 10th birthday! I love that!!
My oh my, I’m tired reading this. A, do you also feel you’re always “not giving enough”? That’s a feeling I often hit!
